Used in the right way LinkedIn can be an extremely effective way to generate those all-important leads. There are however, some housekeeping rules that need to be in place before even contemplating using the platform. Here are some handy tips to get you started.

Make it personal
• Always include a photo of yourself, keep it professional. Your picture one of the most important parts of your profile.

Is your profile complete?
• Is your profile up to date? This may seem like an obvious question, but I’ve seen so many profiles with the wrong headlines. Make sure your most current job role is at the top, make sure your profile description is up to date and says the right things about you and make sure that your experiences and skills are all relevant.

How active are you?
• People are more likely to engage with you if you have a good number of connections. One or two will not give the right impression, so start reaching out to people. Start with people you know – that’s a quick and easy fix – get those numbers up.
• Share content with your network, comment on other posts, create your own posts

Ask for recommendations
• Don’t be shy, this is a great way to make a good impression, so don’t be afraid to ask people who you have worked with for recommendations – you’ll be surprised how nice people can be!!

Join groups
• Choose some groups that are relevant to your interests and join them. Some are open groups and you can join straight away, others you will need permission to join. Once in join the conversations, comment on posts and write your own opinions. The main thing is to be visible.
